These are starting points, not boundaries. The right fit depends on your shift, how you'll get to work and the kind of neighborhood you want, so let's talk it through. Looking for something walkable or quiet? See the Pittsburgh neighborhood guide.
What to think about
A home that works with healthcare hours
Your commute, at shift-change time
A drive that's easy at noon can look different at 6:45 a.m. or after a night shift. Think about whether you'll drive and park, take the bus or walk, and test the route at the hours you'll actually work.
On-call and response times
If your role includes call, ask your department how close you need to live before you fall in love with a house farther out.
Sleep after nights
Working nights means sleeping days. A bedroom away from a busy street can matter more than you'd expect.
Your start date
Residencies, fellowships and new hospital roles often come with fixed start dates. Starting the search early, even from out of state, gives you more time to choose well.
